Module 1: Opioids and Concepts
Introduces foundational knowledge in opioid pharmacology, addiction theory and the rationale for opioid agonist therapy (OAT), establishing the clinical context for subsequent modules.
Module 2: Kinetics and Dynamics – Methadone and Buprenorphine
Provides practitioners with an applied understanding of how methadone and buprenorphine interact with the body, informing clinical decision-making.
Module 3: Clinical Assessment
Outlines a structured, evidence-informed approach to assessing patients with suspected OUD in primary and specialist settings.
Module 4: The Patient Arc
Maps the full clinical trajectory of OAT, from treatment induction to cessation, highlighting longitudinal care considerations.
Module 5: Special Circumstances
Equips clinicians to manage complex clinical scenarios that affect the safety and efficacy of OAT delivery.
Module 6: Pregnancy and Lactation
Covers safe and effective OAT delivery during pregnancy and breastfeeding, incorporating neonatal and maternal considerations.
Module 7: Opioid Agonist Therapy in Victoria
Provides a jurisdiction-specific overview of legal, regulatory and clinical frameworks guiding the delivery of OAT in Victoria.
Module 8: Nurse Practitioner Perspective (Optional)
Promotes interprofessional collaboration by exploring the role and scope of nurse practitioners (NPs) in the OAT space.
Learning outcomes
- Identify opioid toxicity in a patient requesting a prescription for opioids.
- Recognise opioid withdrawal in a patient requesting a prescription for opioids.
- Decide when opioid use disorder is present in a patient requesting a prescription of opioids.
- Compare the formulations of methadone and buprenorphine.
- Understand the Victorian medicolegal context to be able to manage patients with opioid use disorder.
- Provide appropriate overdose management advice.
